where NC stands
The North Carolina Medical Examiner system has been under fire since an investigation in 2001 but after the Charlotte Observer led a similar investigation in 2012, a public outrage ensued. The Charlotte Observer found that medical examiners have been slacking on fundamental steps during investigations like visiting the crime scene, viewing the bodies, and talking to the families of the deceased. Skipping these crucial steps results in families unaware of how loved ones died, families unable to collect insurance money, wrong causes of deaths, wrongly convicted people going to jail, and killers going free.
